Phone Numble swaps letters for digits: you're guessing a random 10-digit sequence formatted like a US phone number, and tiles tell you which digits are right and where. Here's how the feedback works and how to use it efficiently.

How US Phone Numbers Are Structured

Every guess follows the North American Numbering Plan format: a 3-digit area code, a 3-digit central office code, and a 4-digit line number. This isn't just cosmetic — it shapes strategy, because real numbering rules mean area codes and central office codes never start with 0 or 1. Phone Numble doesn't always enforce that rule in its randomized targets, but it's worth testing higher digits first in those two leading positions since they hit more often in practice.

Opening Strategy

Start with ten distinct digits

Your first guess should avoid repeats. A guess like 555-123-4567 wastes tile slots confirming a digit you've already tested. Spreading ten different digits across your first one or two guesses gets you the most information per turn — the numeric equivalent of testing multiple vowels early in Wordle.

Weight the area code position

Because area codes and central office codes conventionally avoid a leading 0 or 1, testing 2 through 9 in positions 1 and 4 tends to pay off more often than testing 0 or 1 there first, even though the puzzle can technically place any digit anywhere.

Worked Example: Reading a Full Turn

Say your opening guess is 415-382-9076 and the board returns:

  • Green (4, 8, 6): 4 is locked at position 1, 8 at position 5, 6 at position 10. Don't move these again.
  • Yellow (5, 9): 5 is in the number but not at position 3. 9 is in the number but not at position 7.
  • Gray (1, 3, 2, 0, 7): these five digits are completely absent from the target. Cross them off your mental keypad.

Your remaining candidate pool for the unsolved positions is now built from the digits you haven't ruled out, plus 5 and 9 relocated. On turn two, move 5 into the central-office block and try 9 nearer the front — you're testing new positions for confirmed digits rather than guessing blind.

Duplicate-digit rule: if a guess has two 8s and the result shows one green and one gray, the target has exactly one 8. If both come back yellow, the target has at least two 8s and neither is placed correctly yet.

Once you're close

By turn four, if you've confirmed seven of ten digits, stop guessing full sequences at random. Fill only the open slots with untested digits — at that stage, targeted single-position tests beat another full guess.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the same digit appear more than once in a target number?

Yes. Repeated digits are common, and each occurrence is scored on its own position — a repeated digit doesn't get a "free pass" once you've found one instance of it.

What if I guess a duplicate digit but the target only has one?

The engine matches as many instances as actually exist. With two guessed 8s and only one in the target, one tile comes back green or yellow and the extra one comes back gray — never two positive results for a digit that only appears once.

Are the target numbers real, working phone numbers?

No. Targets are randomly generated 10-digit sequences that follow phone-number formatting for puzzle purposes only. They aren't tied to any real, active line.

Is there a daily limit, or can I keep replaying?

The "Unlimited" mode generates a fresh sequence each time you finish a round, so there's no daily cap — it's meant for repeated practice rather than a single shared daily answer.
