Word Descrambler

Paste up to 15 scrambled letters, walk out with every real word they can make: longest first, priced in Scrabble points. Blanks, dictionaries and filters come along.

Use ? or * for a blank tile. Results are grouped from longest to shortest.

What a word descrambler actually does

A word descrambler swallows a mess of letters and returns real words. Type TSANIL and out come instal as a full-length match, plus every shorter word hiding inside: slant, saint, satin, nails, lint, tin, an. Nothing to memorise, no guessing which dictionary is right.

Three honest uses: unscrambling a puzzle word, ranking a Scrabble-style rack for points, and vocabulary repair after a loss, since seeing what you missed is the lesson. All three names, descrambler, unscrambler and word unjumbler, mean exactly this.

How to use it in three moves

Type your letters

Fifteen characters deep. A ? in for every blank tile or unknown letter. Upper case, lower case, the engine shrugs.

Pick a dictionary

NWL for North American Scrabble, CSW for UK and tournament play abroad, ENABLE for most mobile word games.

Narrow it down

Pinning a start, an end or a must-have letter shrinks the wall of words to whatever your board or puzzle slot can wear.

Six letters. Watch how a descrambler organises answers instead of dumping an alphabetical wall on you.

6 letterssilent, tinsel, enlist, inlets, listen
5 lettersinlet, islet, istle, lines, liens, tiles
4 letterslint, list, tile, site, nest, lens, lies
3 lettersnet, sit, ten, tin, lie, sin, ens
2 lettersen, in, is, it, li, el, ne

Bonus puzzles that hide a two-word answer reward patience: solve for the longer word first and what is left over usually spells the short one.

Descramble for your game

One warning, though: each game owns its dictionary. The tuned page for yours sits below.

Filters that save you time

A thousand-word list is noise until filtered. The options live under the search box, and sharper clues have their own pages:

Blanks and wildcards

A blank stands for any letter at all, so even one ? can multiply results a lot. Descramble first without it to see your solid plays, then add the blank to check for bingos. In Scrabble a blank scores zero, so a blank-free play is sometimes worth more than a longer one.

Dictionary choice

NWL and CSW disagree on hundreds of words. A play that is legal in London can be challenged off the board in New York, so match the dictionary to your opponent.

Descramble by hand: five habits that work

  1. Hunt for endings first. Pull out -ING, -ED, -ER, -EST, -LY or a plural S and solve the stem.
  2. Spot the prefixes. RE-, UN-, IN-, DIS- and OUT- peel off cleanly.
  3. Pair consonant clusters. TH, CH, SH, ST, TR, PL and BL almost always travel together.
  1. Balance your vowels. A rack with five vowels or none is a signal to look for short words, not bingos.
  2. Rearrange on paper. Writing letters in a circle breaks the visual lock of the original order.

Keep QI, QAT and QUA in mind. They let you dump a Q without needing a U.

Scrabble tile values at a glance

Descrambler results are more useful when you know which letters pay. Standard English values:

1: A E I O U L N S T R2: D G3: B C M P4: F H V W Y5: K8: J X10: Q Z

Words with Friends and Wordfeud use different values, which is why the best play changes between games. Use the matching solver above for exact scores.

Word descrambler FAQ

What is a word descrambler?

Letters arrive scrambled and leave as real dictionary words, every length represented, two-letter words serving as the floor.

Is a word descrambler the same as a word unscrambler?

Yes. Descrambler, unscrambler, unjumbler: one job, three nameplates, zero difference in output.

How do I descramble a word with blank tiles?

A ? or * parks a slot open, and the tool walks A to Z through it, keeping only the words that stand up.

What is the difference between a descrambler and an anagram solver?

Anagram solver: every letter, mandatory. Descrambler: subsets welcome, which is most rack games in practice. For the strict version, open the anagram solver for exact rearrangements.

Which dictionary should I choose?

NWL for US and Canadian Scrabble, CSW for UK and international play, ENABLE for most casual mobile games.

Can I use it for Wordscapes or Word Cookies?
